Services
Counselling is about supporting you in finding your own way forward, rather than offering direct advice. Peter’s aim is to create a space where you can explore your challenges, gain insights, and make decisions that feel right for you. While he may suggest some strategies, the decisions are always yours. His role is to guide and support you as you work toward clarity, growth, and positive change.
Sessions typically last 50 to 55 minutes, and the frequency of appointments is adjusted to suit each individual’s needs. For those on a benefit or with a low income, funding may be available through WINZ, or a GP referral might provide access to funding through the regional PHO.
Below are the specialist services Peter offers.

Supervision
Professional supervision ensures both the safety of clients and the well-being of those in helping roles. It provides a space to reflect on challenges, clarify client issues, and develop strategies for difficult situations. Peter offers supervision for counsellors, ministers, and professionals working with people in various capacities.
Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)
Peter is contracted with TELUS and OCP to provide support for employees facing workplace stress, relationship challenges, and bullying. His confidential counselling helps individuals navigate workplace issues and improve overall well-being.

Adoption Support
Adoption brings both joy and loss for everyone involved—the adoptee, birth parent, and adoptive family. Peter understands this first-hand as both an adoptee and an adoptive parent. He provides specialised counselling to support individuals in processing emotions around identity, grief, and family relationships.
Grief & Loss
Loss can profoundly impact our lives, leading to deep sadness and emotional distress. Grief is a personal journey, and while others may expect us to “move on,” the process takes time. Peter provides compassionate counselling to support individuals as they navigate their grief and find ways to heal.

Workplace Bullying
Bullying is a serious issue in New Zealand, affecting workplaces, schools, and communities. It can cause significant emotional distress and long-term effects. Peter offers counselling and support to help individuals address workplace bullying and regain confidence and resilience.
Anxiety
Anxiety can range from mild worry to overwhelming fear, often centred around uncertainty about the future. Counselling can help individuals develop strategies to manage anxious thoughts, stay present, and regain a sense of control.

Anger Management
Anger often stems from deeper emotions such as rejection, fear, or frustration. While it is a natural response, unmanaged anger can damage relationships and well-being. Peter helps clients understand their triggers, develop healthier responses, and learn effective coping strategies.
Depression
Depression is more than just feeling sad—it can be overwhelming and debilitating. Whether it stems from grief, burnout, chemical imbalances, or personal struggles, professional support is essential. Peter provides counselling to help individuals understand their depression, develop coping strategies, and find a path toward recovery. If you are experiencing severe distress, it is important to also seek medical advice.

Relationship & Intimacy Counselling
Healthy relationships require effort and communication. Conflict is a natural part of growth, but unresolved issues can create distance. Peter uses Imago Relationship Therapy developed by Drs Harville Hendrix and Helen LaKelly Hunt, focusing on dialogue, validation, and empathy to help couples build stronger, more fulfilling relationships.
Parenting Support
Parenting is both rewarding and challenging. Children thrive when they feel loved, understood, and emotionally supported. Peter provides guidance for parents based on research from experts like Dr Daniel Siegel, helping them foster secure and healthy connections with their children.

Culturally Responsive Counselling
Peter is committed to honouring and implementing Te Tiriti o Waitangi into his practice. He incorporates Te Whare Tapa Whā, a Māori health model developed by Professor Mason Durie, which considers the interconnectedness of whānau (family), wairua (spiritual), tinana (physical), and hinengaro (mental well-being). He is also committed to counselling culturally diverse clients from all backgrounds who are invited to share their perspectives so that counselling can be a collaborative and respectful process.
